Felipe II
- Felipe II reigns from 1556 to 1598.
- He was the son of Carlos I and Isabella of Portugal.
- Height (cumbre) of the Spanish Empire.
- His reign was full of conflicts.
- War against Protestants in the Netherlands.
- 1571 defeated the Ottoman Empire at the Battle of Lepanto.
- 1580 conquered Portugal and its empire.
- 1588 he sent the Spanish Armada into a battle against England. Spain lost.
- These battles cost a lot of money and poverty increased in Spain.

Why was Carlos I also called Carlos V?
- Carlos´s grandfather was King Fernando II. When he died Carlos became Carlos I of Spain.
- His other grandfather was the Holy Roman Emperor. He also inherited that German Empire and became Carlos V.
